How they handle UPI and bill payments

Scanning QR codes and sending money

Google Pay and WhatsApp Pay let you scan a QR code scanner or send money to contacts using a UPI PIN. Both apps require bank account linking to send money. Google Wallet cannot scan UPI QR codes or link directly to a bank account for UPI transfers. If you are concerned about security, learn what to do in the first hour after a UPI fraud to get your money back.

Paying utility bills

WhatsApp Pay added Bharat Connect in 2026 to let you pay utility bills directly inside a chat window. Google Pay has a dedicated bill payment section with reminders. Google Wallet does not have a bill payment feature. You can explore other payments and UPI apps to compare features.

Tap to pay, cards and digital tickets

NFC payments with saved cards

Google Pay allows tap to pay using NFC payments with saved debit and credit cards. It uses a token system to hide actual card numbers from merchants during these transactions. Google Wallet in India does not support storing bank cards or making digital payments, and WhatsApp Pay does not support NFC payments. Storing boarding passes and railway tickets

Google Wallet stores boarding passes and loyalty tickets. It added a feature to automatically pull train tickets and PNRs from Gmail in May 2024. WhatsApp Pay and Google Pay do not store boarding passes or digital railway tickets.

Phone permissions and what goes wrong

WhatsApp Pay and Google Pay request to read your text messages and record audio based on Google Play store data (Qrates directory). They require SMS access to verify phone numbers with banks for UPI registration. Google Wallet only asks to read your contacts, see your location and read your phone identity. User reviews show where the apps struggle. Qrates data shows 7 of 400 WhatsApp Pay reviews complain they cannot get in, and 0 percent of one and two star reviews get a reply. Google Pay replies to 50 percent of poor reviews, with 4 of 400 users complaining that nobody answers their support queries (Qrates directory).

Who each one suits, by need

  • If paying friends while chatting matters to you, note that WhatsApp Pay keeps both actions in one screen.
  • If storing flight tickets and loyalty cards matters to you, note that Google Wallet is built for this but cannot make UPI payments.
  • If you need a dedicated UPI app with bill reminders, note that Google Pay offers a separate interface for this. You can also browse our full list of every money app in India to find the best fit for your financial needs.
