You can find most forgotten mutual fund investments by signing up on MF Central with your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and the mobile number registered in your folios. SEBI's annual report shows ₹1,122 crore of unclaimed redemptions and ₹2,689 crore of unclaimed dividends in mutual funds as on 31 March 2026. That is ₹3,811 crore in total. This guide explains how to track down your share and claim it.
Quick answer
MF Central is an investor services platform conceived by CAMS and KFintech, the two registrars that service mutual fund folios. It is open only to people who already hold at least one mutual fund investment. Once you log in, it shows the folios registered to your PAN and mobile number, across fund houses.
Folios with a different mobile number, or none, sit in a separate Unregistered Folios section. Folios without your correct PAN may not appear at all, so also search on MITRA (explained below). To redeem through MF Central, you must be Know Your Customer (KYC) compliant. A nominee is not listed as a condition for redeeming.
What you need before you start
Gather these details before you create an account:
- Your PAN card.
- The mobile number registered in your mutual fund folios.
- Your email address, if your folio has only an email registered.
- If you are tracking investments for a deceased family member, you need their details, their death certificate, and the claim documents listed in the transmission section below.
How to trace forgotten mutual fund investments on MF Central
Step 1: Sign up with your PAN and mobile number
Go to the official MF Central website or use the app. Enter your PAN or PEKRN and the mobile number registered in your folios to receive a One Time Password (OTP). MF Central says this takes no more than 5 minutes for an existing investor.
Step 2: View your portfolio and account statement
Go to the portfolio screen after you log in. It shows the folios registered to your login. You can also generate a Common Account Statement (CAS) on MF Central. The CAS covers only registered folios, so also open the Unregistered Folios section. If a folio is still missing, check that the correct PAN is captured against it.
Step 3: Check the unclaimed dividends section
Select "View Unclaimed Payouts" on MF Central. It shows any folios with an unclaimed amount, along with the year, type (dividend or redemption) and amount. An amount is unclaimed when it could not be credited to your account or you did not encash it. You cannot claim it on MF Central yet. Send a claim form to the registrar of that fund house.
What to do after you find your old investments
Check and update your KYC status
Old mutual fund folios often have outdated KYC details. You must be KYC compliant to redeem through MF Central. Check your status on a KYC Registration Agency (KRA) website or your fund or registrar's website. If it shows "KYC On-Hold", you cannot transact until it is fixed. You can submit the update through any SEBI-registered intermediary.
Add a nominee to the folio
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) requires investors to either add a nominee or formally opt out of nomination for single-holder folios (SEBI circular dated 29 May 2026). Nomination is optional for joint mutual fund folios. From 1 September 2026, folios without a nomination, including those that opted out, get reminder messages twice a year and a pop-up on the first login of the day. The circular does not list a block on redemption.
File a transmission request for deceased parents
If the original investor has passed away, the legal heir cannot simply log in and sell the funds. You must submit a transmission request to the fund house or its registrar, CAMS or KFintech. MF Central also has a Transmission Request link. If you file online, you may still have to show original documents in person. You will need the death certificate (original, attested copy, or a copy with a QR code) and your own KYC documents. An affidavit-cum-NOC from legal heirs may also apply, depending on the claim.
How long it takes and what it costs
| Task | Time taken |
|---|---|
| Creating an MF Central account | Up to 5 minutes |
| Updating KYC status | Varies. Track the status on the KRA website |
| Processing a transmission request | Up to 21 calendar days from receipt of all required documents |
The 21-day limit comes from SEBI's circular dated 23 July 2026, which took effect 30 days after issue. Check any fees with MF Central, the KRA or the registrar. A notarised affidavit, where required, has its own cost.
If it does not work
If your current mobile number does not match the old folio records, those folios appear under Unregistered Folios. You can update the number there by uploading a scan-based change request. If you have neither the registered mobile number nor your password, visit your nearest KFintech or CAMS branch.
You can also use MITRA (Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant) to search for inactive and unclaimed folios. SEBI provided for it in a circular dated 12 February 2025. CAMS and KFintech host it, and you can reach it from MF Central through "Locate Inactive Folios". You search with your name and at least two other details from the time of investment. It shows the fund where a folio may exist, and you then contact that fund or its registrar with your documents.
Once you recover your funds, you might want to move them to a modern platform. You can check the Qrates mutual fund apps directory to see the licences, fees and complaints of wealth apps you might use to manage this money. If you encounter issues with a broker or fund house during this process, you can learn how to file a complaint on SEBI SCORES to resolve disputes. Additionally, if you have other financial assets, you may want to find unclaimed deposits on RBI UDGAM to ensure you aren't missing out on other funds. If you need to escalate a grievance further, check how to complain to the RBI Ombudsman for banking-related issues.
