To update KYC for a mutual fund and demat account, you submit a KYC modification request through a SEBI registered intermediary. This can be your broker, your mutual fund or its registrar, such as CAMS or KFintech. If your status is On Hold, KFintech says your KYC is treated as invalid and you cannot transact until you fix it. SEBI's FAQ allows existing clients as on 31 March 2024 to exit (sale or redemption) subject to due diligence by the intermediary. Once your KYC is validated, you can check the Qrates stock broking and mutual fund app directories to compare account opening fees and complaint rates. If you encounter issues with your service provider, you can learn how to file a complaint on SEBI SCORES against a broker or mutual fund to resolve disputes.
What you need before you start
Before you begin a process for re-KYC for mutual funds online or a demat account, gather these items.
- Your PAN card number.
- Your Aadhaar number. SEBI says your mobile number should preferably be the one linked to Aadhaar.
- A DigiLocker account, if you want to fetch your document that way.
- A smartphone or laptop with a working camera, in case the route asks for a live photo or video.
- Location services turned on. CAMS requires this for its online modification route.
Steps to check and update your KYC online
Follow these steps to fix an On Hold record. Screen names can vary by platform.
Step 1: Check your current status on a KRA portal
You need to know how to check KYC status for demat account and mutual fund holdings. Look for a KYC Status link on the website of a mutual fund or registrar where you invest. If there is none, go to the CVL KRA website and click on KYC Inquiry. Enter your PAN and the captcha to see if your status is Validated, Registered, or On Hold. You can also check on other KRA websites such as NDML. SEBI says records verified with official databases, and where PAN-Aadhaar linking is verified, are Validated records. Before choosing a new platform, you should also check if a stock broker is SEBI registered and spot fake trading apps to ensure your investments are safe.
Step 2: Start the re-KYC process
If your status is On Hold, the mutual fund or registrar website shows the reason. It can be PAN validation failure, mobile and email not validated, or a problem with your documents (CVL KRA). If your status is Registered, you can continue transacting in your existing fund houses, but you must update it to invest with a new mutual fund house (KFintech, CAMS). You can start the update on the CAMS online KYC modification page, or through your broker or depository participant for a demat account.
Step 3: Verify your Aadhaar via DigiLocker
Enter your PAN and mobile number on the portal. On the CAMS online route, residents in India use DigiLocker or Aadhaar eKYC. SEBI lists DigiLocker and online or offline Aadhaar among the accepted tools for digital KYC. If you have just linked your PAN and Aadhaar, SEBI says to inform your intermediary or update it on the KRA portal.
Step 4: Complete the live check and e-sign
Allow camera and location permissions on your device if asked. SEBI says digital KYC can include video capture in a live environment, time stamping, geo-location and a liveliness check. On the CAMS Aadhaar route, an Aadhaar eSign is required to submit the request.
How long it takes and what it costs
We could not confirm a single fee for all platforms. CDSL says each depository participant publishes its own tariff, so ask your broker or platform whether it charges anything.
After you submit your details, the KRA checks them. CAMS says processing can take 7 to 15 business days, depending on the KRA. Once validated, the KRA changes your status to Validated and tells the registrar, and you can transact after the registrar's records are updated (CAMS). For a demat account, CDSL says the account is unfrozen once the missing details are captured by the depository participant, and blocked trading accounts are unblocked on the T+1 trading day after approval. You can visit Qrates to check the latest account opening fees and complaint rates for yourself.
If it does not work
Sometimes the online portals face technical issues.
- If the KRA portal shows an error, contact your demat account broker or the KRA office or helpline listed on its website.
- If you do not receive the Aadhaar OTP, update the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar through UIDAI first.
- If your DigiLocker fetch fails, KFintech says you can submit re-KYC with any officially valid document at the nearest AMC or registrar service centre. The accepted list includes the passport and driving licence. If you submit an Aadhaar copy, mask the number. A record made with a non-Aadhaar document usually shows as Registered, not Validated.
FAQs
How to check if my mutual fund KYC is valid?
Use the KYC Status link on a mutual fund or registrar website, or go to the CVL KRA website, open KYC Inquiry and enter your PAN. If the status says Validated, you can transact in any mutual fund without further action.
Is re-KYC mandatory for a demat account?
Demat accounts need six KYC details: name, PAN, address, mobile number, email and income range. CDSL says accounts missing them can be frozen for debits. On Hold needs fixing. If your status is Registered, you need fresh KYC to invest with a new fund house or a new SEBI registered intermediary.
What happens if mutual fund KYC is on hold?
KFintech and CAMS say investors with On Hold status are not allowed to transact, and financial and select non-financial transactions are restricted. SIP triggers are also restricted. SEBI's FAQ says existing clients as on 31 March 2024 can still exit (sale or redemption), subject to due diligence by the intermediary.
How to change my mobile number in KRA KYC?
Submit a KYC modification request through any SEBI registered intermediary. CAMS offers an online route for mobile number, email and address changes for PANs held with any KRA. Residents use DigiLocker or Aadhaar eKYC on this route, and Aadhaar eSign is required.
How can I update my mutual fund KYC online?
CVL KRA says you can update through mutual fund and registrar websites using your PAN and Aadhaar through XML, DigiLocker or M-Aadhaar. CAMS has an online KYC modification journey. Your broker or depository participant can also help for a demat account.
