Google Wallet is a digital storage app for boarding passes, loyalty cards and credit cards. It is not a UPI payment app like Google Pay. It stores data and uses tokenization for tap-to-pay transactions instead of moving money directly. Because of this, it does not need a Reserve Bank of India licence. The app requests permission to see your location and read your contacts. Recent Google Wallet reviews show a drop in user satisfaction, with an average rating of 2.17 in the last 90 days (Qrates directory).

Licence and registration

Google Wallet is published by Google LLC. It falls under the payments and UPI apps category in our directory. We could not match a licence for Google Wallet on the registers we check, which include the RBI, SEBI and IRDAI.

UPI apps run as third-party app providers approved by the National Payments Corporation of India through partner banks. This NPCI list is not one of the registers we check. We state that we could not match a licence instead of calling the app unlicensed.

Google Wallet itself does not process UPI payments. It operates outside the direct payment aggregator rules that apply to financial institutions.

Regulator warnings

There are no active warnings from the RBI or NPCI regarding Google Wallet. The app relies on your bank for payment security.

To understand how other popular apps compare in terms of safety and licensing, you can read our guide on Is Google Pay safe and registered in India? Licences, permissions and complaints. The RBI guidelines on tokenization apply to the banks that issue the credit cards you store in the app (RBI circular on Tokenization and Card Payment Services). This means your bank holds the regulatory responsibility for the actual transaction. The app simply passes a digital token to the merchant terminal.

What it can read on your phone

Google Wallet requests specific permissions on your device to function. According to the Qrates directory, it asks to read your contacts, see your location and read your phone identity.

These permissions allow the app to link loyalty cards to your Google account. They also help verify your device for tokenized credit card storage. You can check the latest figures on these permissions at any time on the Google Wallet Qrates page.

What users complain about

Google Wallet has over 100 crore installs. It holds a lifetime Google Play rating of 4.04 from 22,60,472 ratings. Recent user feedback is much lower.

The average rating over the last 90 days is 2.17. Google replies to 47 percent of one and two star reviews. We read 400 recent Google Play reviews to see what goes wrong.

The most raised problem is being pushed into things, noted in 3 of the 400 reviews. The most praised aspect is that the app is easy to use, also mentioned in 3 of the 400 reviews. The app was last updated 4 days ago.
