You can check your CIBIL score for free once a calendar year on the official TransUnion CIBIL website without downloading any third-party apps. You need an ID such as your PAN, a mobile number and an email address to get the report. The report gives you a score between 300 and 900 and lists your active and inactive loan and credit card accounts. CIBIL says a score is available only if you had an active loan or credit card in the last 36 months.

What you need before you start

The sign-up form does not ask for your bank account numbers or credit card details. It asks for these details to verify your identity.

How to read your CIBIL report

The report contains several sections of data. Banks look at specific sections to decide if they will lend you money.

The CIBIL score section

The score section shows a three-digit number ranging from 300 to 900. CIBIL says a score above 700 is generally considered good, and the closer you are to 900, the higher your chances of approval. Each lender sets its own cut-off.

Personal and contact information

This section lists your name, date of birth, ID numbers, phone numbers and up to 4 addresses. You might see multiple addresses if you moved houses or changed jobs. Check this section carefully for spelling errors or addresses you do not recognize.

Account information and repayment history

The account information section shows your active and closed loans and cards. For each one, it shows the lender, account type, date opened, date of last payment, loan amount and current balance.

Next to each loan, you will see a month-by-month grid of your payments, called Days Past Due (DPD). A number shows how many days the payment was late that month. So 050 means 50 days late. CIBIL says anything other than 000 or STD is seen as negative by lenders.

Payment code What it means in your report
000 You paid as per the due date.
030 Your payment was 30 days late.
060 Your payment was 60 days late.
090 Your payment was 90 days late.
STD Standard. Payments are being made within 90 days.
SUB, DBT, LSS Sub-standard, doubtful or loss. These are serious problems on the account.
XXX The bank did not report data to CIBIL for that month.

Hard inquiries

The inquiries section lists the times a bank checked your credit history because you applied for a loan or card. These checks are called hard inquiries. CIBIL says lenders may be cautious if they see many inquiries in a short time, as it can show you are seeking too much credit.

How long it takes and what it costs

Checking your score on the official website takes a few minutes. You do not have to pay for your free report. Further reports in the same year may need a paid CIBIL plan. The RBI requires credit information companies to give you one free full credit report, with score, once between January and December (rbi.org.in).

The four companies registered with the RBI are TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, and CRIF High Mark. You can check with each of them for your free report, if they hold your credit data.

Your credit score changes as you pay off loans or take on new debt. RBI's amended credit reporting directions, in force from 1 July 2026, have lenders report data as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month (rbi.org.in). The earlier cycle was fortnightly. The exact directions differ by type of lender. A recent payment can still take time to show. If you are also researching credit products, ensure you check if a loan app is RBI registered to avoid predatory lenders.

Many people worry that checking their own report will lower your score. Checking your own score is a soft inquiry. CIBIL says your score stays unaffected, however many times you check it.

If it does not work: how to fix errors

Sometimes banks report incorrect data to the credit bureaus. If you see a loan you never took or a late payment you actually paid on time, you can raise a dispute directly on the CIBIL website. This service is free. You can also contact the bank directly.

Log in to your account, refresh your report and go to "Raise a dispute". Select the section that is wrong and submit your dispute. CIBIL says only reports from the past 60 days can be disputed. CIBIL will then contact the bank, and it cannot change the data without the bank's confirmation.

The regulator has strict timelines for fixing these errors. Under RBI's compensation framework, effective from 26 April 2024, if the dispute is not resolved within 30 calendar days, the credit information company or the bank, as applicable, must pay you ₹100 a day as compensation (CIBIL). If you face persistent issues, you can file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman for further resolution.
