How to change your UPI transaction limit: what GPay, PhonePe and banks allow

Most people cannot raise their UPI limit in any app. The standard cap is ₹1 lakh a day from one bank account, and your bank can set a lower one. Google Pay's help page lists no setting to change it. SBI's YONO Lite lists a limit option, while HDFC Bank says users cannot change the limit.

Quick answer: How to set your UPI transaction limit

Third-party apps do not hold your money. Google Pay's help page lists no setting to change your limit. It says your bank may have its own limits and asks you to contact your bank. PhonePe's help page says your bank sets the reduced limits that apply after a UPI PIN reset. So if you want to change your limit on Google Pay or PhonePe, start with your bank.

The standard daily limit is ₹1 lakh, and up to 20 payments in 24 hours (Google Pay and HDFC Bank). ICICI Bank's FAQ gives a count of 10, so check with your own bank. If you are confused about the differences between major platforms, you can read more in our guide on Google Pay vs PhonePe: UPI limits, recharge fees and phone permissions.

What you need before you start

You need a few things ready before you ask about your limits.

  • Your bank's official mobile banking app installed on your phone.
  • The mobile number registered with your bank account, so you can receive OTPs.
  • Your debit card or net banking login details, in case your bank asks you to confirm a change.

What your bank app allows

Menu names differ across banks and app versions. Treat the names below as a guide.

Set UPI limit SBI YONO

SBI's YONO Lite page lists "Set UPI Transaction Limit" under UPI features and says customers can set their own transfer limit for UPI. SBI's page does not give the menu path, so look in the UPI section of the app. In the YONO app, BHIM UPI sits under YONO Pay, but SBI's BHIM UPI page does not list a limit option. SBI's limits page gives a daily UPI limit of ₹1,00,000.

How to change UPI limit in HDFC

HDFC Bank says users cannot increase or make changes to the UPI limit. It gives the limit as ₹1 lakh or 20 transactions in 24 hours for person-to-person and merchant payments. The "Manage limits" option in the HDFC Bank app is for third party transfers, not UPI.

Reduce UPI limit in ICICI and Axis Bank

ICICI Bank says it decides account limits as per its own policy, within the upper limits NPCI sets. Its FAQ does not describe a way for customers to change the limit. Axis Bank's app has a Modify Transaction Limit option under Settings, but Axis Bank's page does not say that it covers UPI. Ask customer care at either bank if you want a lower limit.

Paytm

Paytm is a third-party app too, so the limit depends on the bank account you link. RBI cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank on April 24, 2026, so old advice about that bank no longer applies. If you ever encounter a situation where a transaction fails but funds are taken, refer to our guide on what to do if a UPI payment fails but money is debited.

New NPCI guidelines and special UPI limits for 2026

The National Payments Corporation of India sets the baseline rules for all UPI payments. Banks build their own limits around these NPCI guidelines.

The new user limit

A security limit applies when you start using UPI. On Android, Google Pay and HDFC Bank both cap new users at ₹5,000 for the first 24 hours. On iPhone, Google Pay allows ₹5,000 per 24 hours for the first three days after you add a bank account, with ₹15,000 in total. HDFC Bank says this limit also applies if you change your device, SIM card or mobile number. After a UPI PIN reset, PhonePe says your bank sets a cooling-off period with reduced limits, and this varies by bank. If you suspect your account has been compromised, follow the steps in our guide on what to do in the first hour after a UPI fraud to get your money back.

The ₹5 lakh limit for hospitals and taxes

The maximum transfer amount is higher for specific payments. RBI raised the limit to ₹5 lakh per transaction for tax payments, hospitals, educational institutions and IPO applications (RBI, pib.gov.in). Some verified merchant categories have daily totals up to ₹10 lakh or more (Google Pay). Your bank must support this higher limit for the transaction to go through.

UPI Circle limits for family members

UPI Circle lets you authorise a family member or other trusted person to pay from your bank account, within limits you set in advance (pib.gov.in). You set the monthly cap in your UPI app.

UPI Lite ₹1,000 limit

UPI Lite is a wallet designed for small, fast payments that do not require a UPI PIN. UPI Lite allows up to ₹1,000 per transaction, and the wallet can hold up to ₹5,000 (pib.gov.in).

How long it takes and what it costs

We could not confirm how quickly a limit change takes effect, or whether every bank does it free of charge, because bank pages do not say. Ask your bank. The government says UPI remains free for person-to-person payments and 96% of merchant transactions (pib.gov.in).

Banks can set their own lower limits. Google Pay's bank list shows some banks with lower daily caps, such as ₹25,000 at one co-operative bank. A request to go above your bank's cap will not work.

If it does not work

If your bank app does not show a limit option, check your bank's internet banking site, or ask customer care.

If you have reached the ₹1 lakh limit, Google Pay suggests waiting until the next day, paying a smaller amount or using a different bank account. Call your bank's official customer care number found on the back of your debit card to check whether your account has a lower limit.
