You can stop a UPI autopay mandate by opening your UPI app, finding the Autopay section in your profile, and cancelling the active subscription. Do it as early as you can before the next billing date. RBI rules let you withdraw a mandate at any time and require a notice at least 24 hours before each debit, but they set no cut-off for cancelling (rbi.org.in).

Quick answer

To stop a UPI autopay mandate, open the UPI app where you set it up. Go to your profile settings and find the AutoPay or Mandates section.

Select the active subscription or payment. Tap the option to cancel or pause, and enter your UPI PIN to confirm.

Do this before the next scheduled deduction. HDFC Bank advises cancelling at least 2 to 3 days before the payment. Cancelling stops future debits, but it does not refund money already debited.

What you need before you start

You need four things to cancel a recurring payment:

  1. The smartphone with the specific UPI app used to create the mandate.
  2. Your UPI PIN linked to the bank account that funds the payment.
  3. The name of the merchant or service to identify the correct mandate in your list.
  4. The next billing date.

The billing date matters because your bank must notify you at least 24 hours before the debit (rbi.org.in). That notice is your last clear warning, so do not wait for it if you already know you want to stop.

The RBI e-mandate framework allows recurring transactions up to ₹15,000 each without extra verification, and up to ₹1,00,000 for mutual funds, insurance premiums and credit card bills (rbi.org.in). Withdrawing a mandate needs extra verification from your bank, which is why the app asks for your UPI PIN. If you are ever unsure about a payment link, learn how to verify a payment link or QR code before paying to avoid potential issues.

How to cancel a UPI mandate in Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm

The steps to revoke a mandate depend on the UPI app you use. Start in the app where you first approved the automatic deduction. Menu names can change between app versions. Loan repayment mandates usually cannot be cancelled in the app, so contact the lender or merchant for those. You can compare features across different payments and UPI apps if you are considering switching services.

How to remove autopay in Google Pay

  1. Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture at the top right corner.
  2. Select "Autopay".
  3. In the "Live" tab, tap the mandate you want to remove.
  4. Select "Cancel autopay". You can also choose "Pause autopay" and set start and end dates.
  5. Enter your UPI PIN.
  6. Check the status in the "Live" tab to confirm the change.

How to stop PhonePe autopay

  1. Open PhonePe and go to your profile.
  2. Open "Autopay Settings". On some versions this may sit under a payment management section.
  3. Find the mandate for the merchant you want to stop paying.
  4. Delete the mandate, or choose "Pause" to stop deductions for a while.
  5. Confirm with your UPI PIN if the app asks for it.

PhonePe's terms say some mandates can be changed only through the merchant.

How to cancel a Paytm UPI mandate

  1. Open Paytm and tap your profile icon.
  2. Go to "UPI & Payment Settings".
  3. Select "Automatic Payments" to find your mandates.
  4. Pick the mandate you want to stop.
  5. Choose the cancel option and enter your UPI PIN.

How long it takes and what it costs

After you enter your PIN, check that the app shows the mandate as cancelled or revoked. If it does not, the mandate may still be live.

RBI says no charges shall be levied on customers for using the e-mandate facility for recurring transactions (rbi.org.in). Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm each say they charge users nothing for the autopay feature.

Action Bank Fee
Cancelling a mandate in the app ₹0
Pausing a mandate in the app ₹0
Mandate fails due to low balance Depends on your bank. Check its schedule of charges

If you do not cancel in time, the bank attempts the deduction. If the payment fails due to a low account balance, your bank may charge a fee. The amount depends on the bank. The merchant may also charge its own late fee.

If it does not work

If the app shows an error, check your internet connection. Ensure you are entering the correct UPI PIN.

Under RBI rules, your bank must send you a notification at least 24 hours before a recurring payment is deducted (rbi.org.in). FASTag and NCMC auto top-ups are an exception. If money is deducted without this alert, or after you cancelled the mandate, you can raise a dispute. If you suspect you have been a victim of unauthorized activity, follow the what to do in the first hour after a UPI fraud to get your money back guide immediately.

To dispute an unauthorized debit, use the help or complaint option for that transaction in your UPI app, and tell your bank. NPCI also points users to upihelp.npci.org.in for mandate queries. If a cancelled mandate still deducts money, you can check the Qrates directory for the official customer care numbers and grievance redressal links for your UPI app. Understanding Google Pay vs PhonePe: UPI limits, recharge fees and phone permissions can also help you manage your app settings more effectively.

When you approve a new UPI mandate, check the maximum amount and the end date shown on the screen before you enter your PIN.

FAQs

Can I stop a UPI mandate without the merchant?

Usually yes. You can revoke most mandates directly in your UPI app. Loan repayment mandates are the main exception, and you must go through the merchant or lender for those. If you are ending a subscription, also cancel it with the merchant, because the service may stay active.

What happens if UPI autopay bounces?

The debit fails. The mandate usually stays active for the next cycle. Your bank or the merchant may charge a fee, so check your bank's schedule of charges and the merchant's terms.

How to check active UPI mandates?

Open your UPI app profile and look for the Autopay or Automatic Payments section. This screen shows your mandates. In Google Pay, live mandates are in the Live tab.
